Why it’s worth visiting

A must — Moldova's main art museum. Its three founding collections — the Pinacoteca (1939), the Șillingovski graphics and the Baillayre donation — each deserve attention on their own.

The story

The National Museum of Fine Arts of Moldova (MNAM) on 31 August 1989 Street 115 was founded in 1939 by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală and painter Auguste Baillayre. Pinacotheca inauguration on November 26, 1939 — Bessarabia's first art museum. Initial fund: ~160 works by Romanian and Bessarabian artists from Salon X of the Society of Fine Arts. Two fundamental collections: 1947, through Pavel Șillingovski's will (professor at St. Petersburg Academy of Plastic Arts), the museum received an impressive collection of European and Russian graphics from the 17-19th centuries. In 1962, the Auguste Baillayre collection — 342 works national and universal. Today over 39,000 works.
