A good option if you're already around Cahul and want a quiet weekend in the countryside: a rural guesthouse in Văleni with a cherry orchard and a wooden swing, two nights with breakfast from about 1500 lei per couple. Best in summer, if you're after calm rather than buzz.
Aroma Lemnului is Văleni's smallest pension — 2–3 simple rooms, one floor, but the yard is the gem — a big garden with cherry trees blooming in spring and bearing fruit in summer, a large double wooden swing painted dark with a red shingled roof for reading or coffee breaks, paving in red-and-beige tiles decorated with fly-agaric mushroom figurines (the red-with-white-dots kind from fairy tales). Interior furniture is simple, but natural wood is everywhere — beams, tables, beds — hence the name 'Aroma of Wood'. The host serves breakfast with products from her own cherry trees (cherry jam, preserves) and prepares lunch on request. A fitting place for a couple or small family who want the garden more than the room.
