Why it’s worth visiting

A must — where Moldova's natural and ethnographic identity comes together, inside Chișinău's most spectacular museum building. Pairs with the Art Museum (next door).

The story

The National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History on Mihail Kogălniceanu Street 82A is Moldova's oldest museum. History begins in 1889 with the Agricultural-Industrial Exhibition organized by the Bessarabian Zemstva. Founder-custodian: Franz Ostermann (1844-1905), born in Bohemia, first curator of the entomological collection. His wife Albina Osterman founded the ethnographic collections. Current building completed 1905, inaugurated June 1906 — in a Moorish-Oriental style unique in Chișinău. Important collections: mammoth skeleton discovered at Cocieri (the largest exhibit in Moldova), Moldovan steppe evolution, regional folk costumes, birds, fossils, herbarium.
